Amy Irving's Biography
Amy Irving was born in Palo Alto, California in 1953, the daughter of stage director and producer Jules Irving and character actress Priscilla Pointer. She trained in acting in New York and London, and began her acting career on Off-Broadway at the age of 17. Six years later, she had her film debut in Carrie (1976), and thereafter established a career as a supporting actress in the movies and on TV, generally playing earnest, attractive women. For one of these performances, in the role of Hadass in 1983's Yentl (1983), she received an Academy Award nomination. She occasionally takes on the lead role in smaller films such as Crossing Delancey (1988), for which she is probably best known. All the while, she continued to act on the stage, including as the lead in the Los Angeles production of \"The Heidi Chronicles,\" and as Mozart's wife in the Broadway production of \"Amadeus.\" Irving continues to spend much of her time in the theater. After having dated him for several years, Irving married movie mogul Steven Spielberg in 1985 when she became pregnant with their son, Max. The marriage ended in 1989, as Spielberg had taken up with actress Kate Capshaw, who he directed in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984). Irving has been involved in a long-term relationship with Brazilian director Bruno Barreto since 1996, and has a son with him, Gabriel. Irving occasionally appears in Barreto's films, such as 2000's Bossa Nova (2000), and lives with him and her two sons in New York. She has a sister, Katie, who sang a few of the songs featured in Carrie (1976), and a brother, David, who directed a few movies produced by Golan/Globus in the 80s. Irving was raised as a Christian Scientist, her mother's religion.
