Armande Assante's Biography
A native of New York City, Assante is a graduate of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, where he won the Jehlinger Award for best actor in 1969. He made his professional stage debut opposite Imogene Coca in Why I Went Crazy, under the direction of Joshua Logan. In 1997, Assante received an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Special for his portrayal of notorious crime boss John Gotti in HBO Picturesą biographical drama Gotti. He also garnered nominations for both a Golden Globe and SAG Award for the same performance. In 1998 Assante was again nominated for a Golden Globe Award for his portrayal of Odysseus in the Hallmark Entertainment/NBC miniseries The Odyssey, which attracted 50 million viewers. More recently, Assante was seen in the Showtime feature On The Beach, opposite Rachel Ward. The remake of the 1950's classic was filmed entirely on location in Australia. He was also recently heard as the voice of the evil character Tzekel-Kan in the Dreamworks animated feature The Road to El Dorado.
