David Parsons's Biography
David Parsons is a recipient of the 2000 Dance Magazine Award, as well as the 2001 American Choreography Award, for his work with AEROS, a production featuring the Romanian Gymnastic Federation that was featured on the Bravo Channel. He has enjoyed a remarkable career as a performer, choreographer, teacher, director, and producer of dance. His work has been enthusiastically embraced by audience, presenters, and critics the work over. Mr. Parsons was born in Illinois and raised in Kansas City, Missouri. From 1978-1987, Mr. Parsons was a leading dancer with the Paul Taylor Dance Company, where Mr. Taylor created many roles for him in works such as Arden Court, Last Look, and Roses. Companies with which he has made guest appearances include the New York City Ballet, the Berlin Opera, MOMIX, and the White Oak Dance Project. Mr. Parsons founded the Company that bears his name with lighting designer Howell Binkley in 1987.
In addition to creating quality dance programs, Mr. Parsons is committed to dance education -- a commitment based on the same values and practices that have garnered his Company's extraordinary success and popularity since its inception in 1987. He has administered a successful eight-season dance festival in Fort Myers, Florida, which has brought noted dance professionals from across the U.S. to work with dance students of all levels in a Parsons-designed curriculum. In the spring of 1999, Mr. Parsons was awarded the National Artist Award by the University of Arizona at Tucson for his outstanding work with young people.
As Artistic Director, Mr. Parsons has created over 70 works on The Parsons Dance Company, having received commissions over the years from presenters such as American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Paul Taylor Dance Company, the American Dance Festival, Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, the Spoleto Festival, and Het Muziektheater in Amsterdam. The work of Mr. Parsons has been seen on Paris Opera Ballet, Feld Ballets/NY, Nederlands Dans Theatre, English National Ballet, Hubbard Street Dance Company, and BatSheva Dance Company of Israel, among many others. Mr. Parsons choreographed and directed the dance elements for Times Square 2000, the 24-hour festivities in Times Square celebrating the turn of the Millennium, which was viewed by billions of people all over the globe.
